Short summary
Differences exist in International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) sediment lithification depending on the coring tool used. Advanced piston corers (APCs) display less pronounced lithification compared to extended core barrels (XCBs) of the same formation. The difference stems from the destruction of early cements between sediment grains and an acoustic compaction caused by the piston-core pressure wave. XCB cores provide a more accurate picture of the lithification of the original formation.
